Therefore, in this article, we will detail everything you need to know about this important document after obtaining Spanish nationality, and consequently a different DNI and passport.

It is also important to note that this process will help you save time and money if done at the right moment. So, keep reading to find the keys to this procedure.

Concordance Certificate (A Step-by-Step Guide)

The concordance certificate is a document through which a person who has become Spanish and previously held an NIE and TIE as a foreign resident in Spain can verify their identity.

This document verifies that the holder is the same person who previously had an NIE and a residence card as a foreigner.

When you acquire Spanish nationality, you not only change your name and surname(s) (or their order). As you lose your status as a foreigner, you obtain a completely new Spanish DNI and passport, with data that does not match your previous residence card.

The first step in this case is to inform immigration authorities that there has been a change in nationality. You will be required to provide this in various public and private entities.

Once the notification is completed, the Provincial Brigade of Foreign Affairs (National Police) or a similar office will issue the concordance certificate.

What is the Concordance Certificate For?

This document certifies that the NIE and data held by public administrations for a person who was previously a foreigner correspond to the name and DNI number they currently have.

It ensures that all procedures or registrations you started with your NIE and TIE remain valid now that you have your DNI and a new passport.

There are some administrative bodies that request it when carrying out certain procedures, where their databases have the old NIE (Foreigner Identification Number).

For example: this occurs with the Tax Agency, Social Security, or the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT). Additionally, private entities such as banks, among others.

Where to Apply for the Concordance Certificate in Spain

You can request it at the nearest National Police Station where you will obtain your Spanish DNI and passport. It is issued by the Office of Foreign Affairs or the Provincial Brigade of Foreign Affairs.

How to Apply for the Concordance Certificate Step by Step

To apply for it, you need to visit the National Police Station (closest within your province of residence) once you have obtained your Spanish DNI and passport.

It is not strictly necessary to obtain it at the same time you receive your new documents, although we recommend doing so as the procedure will be free of charge according to official information.

If for some reason you cannot apply for the concordance certificate at that moment, there’s no need to worry as you can obtain it later.

Additionally, you should note that in your province, there is the possibility to make a prior appointment to obtain the concordance certificate. To request an appointment, click on this official link.
